Earthquake damage likely to impede recovery efforts in Kumamoto

Turning to another country reeling from the
devastating effects of the natural disaster… Citizens of Kumamoto, Japan will have to endure
a longer-than-expected recuperation period after a number of earthquakes devastated the
city. According to local news reports, water, electricity,
gas supplies as well as transportation and communication systems have been severely damaged
or cut off by the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.
As of Monday, an estimated 35-thousand households are without power, 270-thousand without water,
and 100 thousand homes in the western part of the city have had their gas supply cut.
The current lack of manpower and supplies are likely to impede the Japanese government’s
efforts for a speedy recovery.
